She had also waited tables for a couple years while she was in college, which he figured was actually just two summers since the restaurant wasn’t in the same town as her college. Two summers or two days, it didn’t matter. She had food service experience and that was enough.

Katie approached the counter and handed Duane her application. “Thanks,” Duane began. “Let me give it a quick look over.” “Okay,” Katie said with a smile. Duane smiled back and forced his eyes down to the page, scanning to her experience. She had taught history at Fletcher, the beach school.

Duane looked back at Katie. A smile spread across his face. Of course! He could hire her to work the Sunday shift. He looked at Heather, “Take Sunday off. I’ll figure it out.” “Thanks!” “When do you get off today?” “Noon” Duane decided that was enough time to interview Katie.

“Heather, you know you have to trade shifts. We’re really tight for Sundays.” “I know, but no one can trade, and my mom will kill me if I don’t go this thing.” Heather replied in her whiny tone. It wasn’t the first time Heather asked for a weekend day off.

Duane mused over this fact. Being left handed generally meant being ambidextrous. His mind moved in a sexual direction, imagining what this hot girl, Katie, could do to him with two strong hands. “Could I get Sunday off?” Heather asked, ripping him from his fantasy. “I have a family thing.”

“She looked familiar.” Heather continued. Duane just shrugged and looked back to Katie. She was copying information from a paper she’d brought in. Duane assumed it was her references’ contact information. The sunlight hit her arm as she wrote, giving her skin a glow. He noticed she was left handed.

“Who was that woman?” Heather asked loudly. “Wasn’t that your ex?” Duane glared at her. Heather had worked in the store just long enough to see the final weeks of his affair with Marissa. “No, just a woman I know who is going through a hard time.” He said quietly.

Duane moved behind the bar and wiped down the counter while stealing glances at the girl, Katie. “I’ve already done that.” Heather said annoyed. “Just making sure everything’s clean before lunch.” Duane smiled sweetly at Heather. She rolled her eyes and pushed some red oily curls out of her face.

“Just sit wherever you’d like. Did you want any water to drink?” “No thanks.” She smiled again. Duane wondered if he could actually work with her. Employee dating obviously wasn’t allowed. If she worked here long enough to get to know him, then she could move to a different store.

“Here you go.” Duane handed her the application and a pen. “Thank you.” “I’m Duane.” He said and stuck out his hand. “Katie.” She replied, shifting the application to her left hand in order to shake his. She had a firm grasp, confirming that she must have a bachelor’s degree.
